DeeDee's belief in miracles came from all she survived through growing up. It also came from a deep faith instilled by her grandmother and mother. These two women had survived a great deal of abuse and struggle throughout their life and had attributed their survival to God. They shared many of their struggles and narrow escapes with
DeeDee, as she was growing up; but
DeeDee understood there were many more that they did not or could not share. It was this sharing that inspired
DeeDee to share her own struggles and stories of survival with others. She always hoped that somewhere, someone would one day learn that it was okay to talk about these things, that it would help and that she was there for them. She also hoped that those who did not have to go through the things she did would learn that the world was more than just a place to enjoy themselves and think only of themselves and their little circles.
However, while on this journey of sharing, DeeDee met much resistance. She was often told to stop talking and thinking of those things and everything would get better. However, she knew that was not the truth because for many years she had done just that and nothing inside herself or outside in the world had changed much at all. In fact, blacking it out had led to mistakes being repeated in her life with no knowledge of why. As well, keeping some of it bottled up, those things she was unable to black out, had led to many physical and mental health problems.
Although DeeDee eventually found some places where most people did not mind her talking about these things some even encouraged it, there was usually somebody who always doubted her veracity and she never felt quite safe. She knew there was always someone who thought she should be locked away.
