Nobody!

There once was a girl named Nobody. She knew her name was unusual but then so was she. She was very small, quiet, and sometimes felt invisible. The reason she felt like that was because she would sit under the table or behind the furniture and objects and listen to others talk and laugh. They never knew she was there. She longed to join in but knew that she couldn't. She had tried before and was always ignored or told to go away. Nobody learned that being invisible was more a state of mind than an actual thing. Nobody learned to enjoy being invisible. She had no choice.
As Nobody grew up she longed to be accepted, to join in and contribute; but, every time she tried someone always told her to go away. When she ignored them she wound up getting hurt. So Nobody just hid in her mind and stayed invisible!
Nobody grew to be an adult and never learned how to join in. She did learn to pretend to join in and enjoy herself; but, deep down she knew she wasn't accepted. Nobody knew there were lots of other people who felt the same way. She even met some of them. However it didn't help her feel any more visible or any less alone. That is the problem with being Nobody, she never felt totally visible and never felt safe enough to become visible. Nobody was very good at "faking" it. So good in fact that sometimes she fooled herself. Then someone always came along and showed her that she was still Nobody, still invisible and unwanted.
Where will Nobody's life lead? She doesn't know. Maybe she will spend her entire life inside her mind, invisible to the world or maybe she will pop out now and then to "pretend" to join in or to try and reach out; but, the pain and rejection will always drive her back:(

This story is dedicated to Dorothy D.S. Abbott, from Alberta, Canada - long ago disappeared into her mind letting another take on the daily tasks.
